EDGE X: CONVENIENT FICTIONS


   The EDGE Architecture Festival Budapest (EDGE Fest) is Hungary’s first international
architecture festival, organized by Építészfórum and taking place on 3–4 July 2025 at Dürer Kert. 
   The festival aims to spotlight progressive and forward-thinking themes in architecture within both global and regional contexts. It offers a platform for Hungarian architecture and visual arts to engage with the international discourse. 
    EDGE Fest is a multifaceted event, encompassing a professional conference, architectural and design competitions, community programs, an art exhibition, and an awards ceremony.

To speak of architecture now is to speak of a discipline in flux, grappling with climate urgency, technological acceleration, ecological collapse, social injustice, inequalities, and the very question of meaning. The forms of knowledge it draws upon (spatial, digital, material, emotional, systemic) are not only overlapping, but often in confrontation. Architecture happens in that confrontation.

    The exhibition EDGE X: Convenient Fictions aims to foster a critical dialogue around urgent global issues, approached through architectural thinking, not through buildings as objects, but through architecture as a medium capable of enabling and catalyzing complex, trans-scalar, trans-material, and multidisciplinary interactions. Architecture is explored as a set of strategies that enables us to look at the complexities of the world and think about ways to interact with it in reciprocal benefit, for ourselves and for the context we inhabit.

Convenient Fictions is an attempt to look beyond buildings, which, in many cases, serve as façades of intentions that ultimately fail to reflect the complexity of reality. Buildings often reduce spatial possibilities, yet they are presented as inherently positive interventions, a claim perpetuated by their static, unchanging presence. 
Architecture thus reinforces a self-affirming narrative in which buildings are seen as orderly alternatives to a chaotic and polluted world, while in truth, they often sustain a linear, materialist relationship with reality, in which pollution, inequalities, and social injustice are latent. In this sense, buildings may be seen as necessary fictions, structures that affirm the dominance of materiality as the only valid lens through which to engage with the world.

    On the other hand, the inevitable site-specificity of this exhibition is an opportunity to place Hungarian architecture and art in direct conversation and productive confrontation with global architectural practices and methodologies. This directness, this unfiltered dialogue, is an opportunity to think about the role each of us plays in shaping locality, and a reminder of our responsibility in addressing situations that are at the core of our humanity and our relationship with the world as a shared and integral part of our being. Through architectural language, this exhibition aims to open a critical dialogue on the urgent issues shaping our present and future, from climate and technology to society and beyond. It is a checkpoint, not a conclusion, a space to re-sense, re-locate, and re-engage
